Lionel Messi promises fans “We will do our best to win the Champions League again this season”

Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi has pledged to do everything possible to win the Champions League this season after giving a speech to fans at the Nou Camp.

The newly appointed Barca captain addressed a packed out stadium in the Catalan city on Wednesday ahead of the club’s 3-0 trouncing of Boca Juniors in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

Messi netted the second goal against the Argentinian outfit, while summer signings Clement Lenglet, Arthur, Arturo Vidal and Malcom all featured in the victory, with the latter scoring his first goal at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season and looked destined to go through after winning the first leg against Roma 4-1, but a 3-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico for the Italian club knocked the La Liga giants out of the competition.

Messi and co. are now looking to make amends this season, and the Argentine ace has promised to secure the club a sixth European trophy.

Speaking to fans at the Camp Nou, Messi said (via the club’s official website): “We now have a template in place with the new signings this summer.

“Last season we won La Liga and the Copa del Rey, but we fell short in the Champions League.

“We promise this year that we will do our best to win the competition and bring the trophy back to the Camp Nou.”

Barcelona last clinched European club football’s most prestigious trophy in 2015, but they have had to watch on as eternal rivals Real Madrid have won the competition in the past three successive seasons.

The Blaugrana kick off their La Liga campaign against Alaves on Saturday at the Camp Nou.
