The agent of Matteo Darmian has said his client is likely to stay at Manchester United despite the defender claiming he wants to leave the club.
Darmian joined United from Torino in the summer of 2015 but has struggled to nail down a place in the starting line-up at Old Trafford, making only 54 Premier League appearances across three seasons.
Last week, the Italian revealed he is seeking an exit from United in a bid to play regular football somewhere else. A return to Serie A with Napoli has subsequently been mooted by the media.
But his agent, Tullio Tinti, has contradicted Darmian by claiming the 28-year-old will still be a United player beyond both the English and European transfer deadlines.
“There is hardly a possibility of Manchester United and Mourinho giving up Matteo,” said Tinti, according to Metro. “So most likely he won’t leave the Premier League and will stay there.”
Darmian, who has been capped 36 times by Italy, began his career at Milan before spells at Padova and Palermo eventually led to a move to Torino, where he made his name by appearing 151 times for the Italian club.
He is unlikely to reach such a tally with United. Darmian played just eight times in the Premier League last season and only 17 times across all competitions.
The revelation would solve an immediate problem for Jose Mourinho, as the United boss now has a fit right-back for the start of the Premier League season after injuries to Antonio Valencia and Diogo Dalot left him short.
United kick off their Premier League campaign against Leicester City on Friday August 10.
