Real Madrid insist “There is no issue with Luka Modric” despite Inter links

Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno has played down speculation linking central midfield star Luka Modric with a move away from the Spanish capital.

Modric, 32, has been heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan this summer and he could follow in the footsteps of former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo should he relocate to Serie A.

Speculation regarding a potential transfer to the San Siro has been gaining traction in recent weeks, though a move has so far failed to transpire, and Butragueno insists the Croat is more than content to remain in La Liga.

Butragueno, who won six La Liga titles during his playing days with Real, told Movistar+ (via Marca) that the pint-sized pivot would be staying with Los Blancos this season and that there is no issue between both parties.

He said: “There is no issue with Modric, he’s delighted to continue with us.”

It is believed club president Florentino Perez is reluctant to lose two major stars this summer after the departure of Ronaldo to Juventus.

Butragueno made his comments prior to Real’s 4-2 defeat to eternal rivals Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup last night. Modric entered the fray in the 57th minute but was unable to help clinch his side the trophy.

World Cup Golden Ball

Despite entering his twilight years, Modric was an instrumental figure in Croatia’s sensational journey to the World Cup final this summer, clinching the prestigious Golden Ball for best player at the tournament as a result.

It is therefore understandable that the current European champions are unwilling to part ways with their midfield maestro.

In total, the 32-year-old started in seven matches for Croatia in Russia, scoring two goals, as well as netting decisive spot-kicks in the nation’s penalty shoot-out victories against Denmark and Russia – he also provided an assist.

Real Madrid tee off their domestic season with a home fixture against Getafe on Sunday.
