Roma president James Pallotta has confirmed the club wishes to add Sevilla‘s Steven Nzonzi to what he calls his “best Roma squad.”
The former Blackburn Rovers midfielder has won the Europa League since joining the Spanish side in 2015 and earned nine caps for the French national team, culminating in him picking up a World Cup winner’s medal this summer.
And Pallotta believes Nzonzi would be a great fit for the Giallorossi, despite now being 29-years-old.
He told Il Messaggero (via FourFourTwo): “Nzonzi is a beast.
“He’s not too old; he’s 29 years old and he’s in perfect shape.
“There is never a problem of age for a player, it’s about his quality and the sustainability of the deal.”
Nzonzi, who completed an average of 1.6 tackles per 90 minutes in La Liga last season, would be the ideal replacement for the dynamic Radja Nainggolan, who recently joined Inter Milan.
However, having already signed the likes of Justin Kluivert, Javier Pastore and Bryan Cristante, Pallotta wouldn’t be too disappointed if Roma didn’t manage to bring in Nzonzi.
He said: “On paper, we have the best team we have ever had under me. [Patrik] Schick and [Rick] Karsdorp are back, [Luca] Pellegrini and [Cengiz] Under have been developing for a year.
“Pastore, [Ivan] Marcano, Cristante and Kluivert are all great signings. The team has been built and organised to score more.
“We have a very good team and we will see what happens.”
Last year’s Champions League semi-finalists finish their pre-season preparations against Real Madrid on Wednesday August 8, before kicking off their Serie A campaign away to Torino on August 19.
