Son Heung-Min apologises to Spurs teammates for Asian Games absence

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-Min has apologised to his team-mates in advance for the Premier League games he is set to miss.

Having recently returned from representing South Korea at the World Cup, Son will shortly be leaving once more to play for his country in the Asian Games.

Son will be available to play for Tottenham in their season opener against Newcastle United on August 11 but will then miss Spurs’ next three league games should South Korea make it to the final.

And for that, Son has apologised to his Spurs team-mates in advance.

“I feel sorry because Tottenham is my team and I feel very sorry for my team-mates and coaching staff,” he said (via the Independent).

“But I am playing for my country and that is also important. But honestly, I feel very sorry about that. That is what I feel.”

By winning the Asian Games, Son could find himself excused from undertaking 21 months of military service which is currently mandatory for all able-bodied South Korean males before they reach the age of 28.

But Son insists this was not on his mind when deciding to take part in the Games.

“We can talk about this afterwards,” he added.

“We haven’t won it already. We are going there to win something and winning trophies for my country is always good. I am going there to win something, to win games. I don’t travel there for nothing.”

Son’s Tottenham career so far

Joining Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen, Son had a subdued start to life in England scoring just four goals and assisting once in 28 Premier League appearances during his first season.

But the South Korean’s influence has grown in the two years since, first scoring 14 goals and recording nine assists in the 2016/17 Premier League season as Spurs finished second behind Chelsea.

And last year, 12 goals and six assists in the Premier League saw Son become one of Tottenham’s most important players alongside Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen.
