Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte has all-but ruled out playing for the Spanish national team.
Laporte has been capped 51 times for France at various youth levels but is yet to play for the senior side and was snubbed by France manager Didier Deschamps for their World Cup-winning squad this summer.
This has prompted suggestions that Laporte could instead choose to play for Spain, having come through the ranks at Athletic Bilbao, but he has been quick to calm those suggestions.
Speaking at a press conference (via the National) ahead of City’s Champions League tie with Lyon on Wednesday, Laporte said: “I don’t think it is possible. If anything, I will play for France. But if I get selected, that is up to the manager, not up to me.”
Laporte, who has made 20 appearances across all competitions since joining City in January, started as his side fell to a 2-1 defeat in their Champions League opener against Lyon, a result that saw Pep Guardiola’s men immediately fall to the bottom of Group F.
The Citizens currently sit in third place in the Premier League and are unbeaten in their first five games so far, and they will still be hoping to progress to the latter stages of the Champions League this term.
Their next Premier League game is away to newly-promoted Cardiff City on Saturday, who are still looking for their first win of the season.
