Rio Ferdinand: Mourinho does not trust Rashford

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho still doesn’t fully trust Marcus Rashford, according to former defender Rio Ferdinand.

The 20-year-old scored two goals in two games for England during the recent international break but is yet to get off the mark for the Red Devils this season.

And Ferdinand, a former Champions League winner with United, reckons Rashford will not be happy with the number of substitute appearances he has been making for Mourinho’s side.

The now-BT Sport pundit said (via the Mirror): “I look at it from Rashford’s point of view. If I am sitting there as Marcus Rashford and someone says to me, ‘Do you think your manager believes in you as his main, best striker and that he will build his team around you?’ I would say, ‘No. Because I am not starting every game.’

“You ask any player. Coming on as a sub – that means nothing.”

Rashford is currently serving a suspension in the Premier League following his red card in United’s 2-0 win at Burnley before the international break but is available for their Champions League game against Young Boys on Wednesday night.

And Mourinho recently launched an avid defence of his use of the England international, with statistical proof that he gives Rashford more than enough appearances in the United first-team.

However, Ferdinand still doubts Mourinho’s faith in Rashford and believes him bringing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in last season will have had an effect on youngster’s confidence.

He added: “You can bring me all the minutes in the world, I don’t care. I don’t want to come on for 10 minutes every game. I want to walk out on that pitch as the starter.

“That is when you know — when you go out there to win every game. Harry Kane starts every game. Kylian Mbappe starts every game. Wayne Rooney started every game. Michael Owen started every game.

“I remember watching Rashford at Celta Vigo in the Europa League. He was like Roy of the Rovers, 19 years old, taking free-kicks and corners and the lot. That is what I loved about him when he first came in.

“There was a single-mindedness, a young kid, with no fear, playing football for Man United, the team he supported as a boy.

“I want to see that back again but listen, the manager is paid to make these decisions. He has brought in Lukaku. He has brought in Sanchez. Them boys will start.”

Despite wanting to see Rashford start more games for the Old Trafford side, Ferdinand did admit that the ball is now in the player’s court to prove that he has the ‘fight in him’ to regain his place.

Ferdinand said: “He [Mourinho] has gone and bought Lukaku, he has gone and bought Sanchez. What message is that sending to this young player? you aren’t my main guy.

“But at the same time, and it goes back to the young players of today, has he got the fight in him?

“You have to put it on Rashford’s toes then.”

Following their Champions League game with Young Boys, United host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday and are aiming to build on their two consecutive league wins.
