Manchester United v Newcastle United: a game between two teams very much in need of a win.

Jose Mourinho has presided over United’s joint-worst start to a league campaign in Premier League history. They have gone four games without a win in all competitions, the first such run of his managerial career, and lost 3-1 away to West Ham United in their last top-flight outing.

Newcastle would not typically be expected to win an away outing against ‘big six’ opposition, but Rafa Benitez’s Magpies are yet to pick up a victory in any competition this season. As such, there is every chance Newcastle could finish the gameweek rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

These two teams err on the more pragmatic side in terms of play-style, but these days every Manchester United game is worth watching, if only with off-field drama and Mourinho’s post-match interviews in mind. So, read on for Manchester United v Newcastle live stream options, team news, predicted XIs, stats and TV channel info.

Team news: What do Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez have to say?

Man United were without four players through injury for the midweek draw with Valencia: Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young. Only the latter stands a chance of returning for Saturday’s late kick-off.

Asked if any of the injured party would be fit enough to figure against Newcastle, Mourinho told MUTV: “No, it’s exactly the same [squad]. No new injuries and the players who were injured [are still out] with the possibility of Ashley Young coming back to the squad but Ashley was really a minor situation.”

Newcastle missed defenders Paul Dummett and Federico Fernandez in last weekend’s 2-0 home defeat to Leicester. They will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s match, Benitez said on Friday, but summer signing Salomon Rondon remains sidelined, with the striker currently recovering from a thigh injury.

Manchester United v Newcastle predicted starting XIs

One interesting question for Mourinho is this: will Marcus Rashford, returning to domestic action from a three-match suspension, occupy Alexis Sanchez’s favoured position on the left wing from the get-go? The Chilean was fielded on the right side against Valencia following a poor run of form this season, in which he is yet to score.

Further back, will Mourinho revert to his back-three system with Marouane Fellaini or Scott McTominay in the sweeper role? The Champions League outing represented an improved performance for the Red Devils and given his XIs have been changing with the wind over this recent difficult patch, Mourinho would be wise to stick with the same line-up, minus Antonio Valencia – who often left United exposed down the right against Los Che – for the promising Diogo Dalot.

Fellaini, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic started in midfield against West Ham, but there is every chance Fred could come back into the line-up.

Predicted Man Utd formation vs Newcastle (4-3-3):

Possible XI: De Gea; Diogo Dalot, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw; Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini; Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford

Predicted Man Utd XI v Newcastle (4-3-3)

“I have to assess Fede (Fernández) and Dummett,” said Benitez in Friday afternoon’s press conference. Should Dummet return, Kenedy can reprise his left-wing role after playing the last game in defence. The Brazilian Chelsea loanee has struggled to replicate his form in black and white toward the end of last term, having failed to create a single chance in the league. But through his dribbling ability, Kenedy does offer a quality that is unique among this Newcastle team. Kenedy has completed 11 take-ons in the Premier League this season, more than twice the total managed by any teammate.

Predicted Newcastle formation vs Man Utd (4-4-1-1):

Possible XI: Martin Dubravka; DeAndre Yedlin, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez, Paul Dummett; Matt Ritchie, Mo Diame, Jonjo Shelvey, Kenedy; Ayoze Perez; Joselu

Head-to-head records and pre-match stats

Man United and Newcastle have played each other 166 times in history, of which the Red Devils have won 84 times while their North-East counterparts have come out on top on 42 occasions. The most recent meeting came in February 2018, when Newcastle stunned Man United 1-0 at St James’ Park.

Current form-wise, stats aren’t particularly encouraging for the teams as going into this game neither side is in particularly fine fettle, with Man United having won three, lost three and drawn once in the league so far; Newcastle have drawn two and lost five.

Man United will be hoping to dispatch with Benitez’s men, if only to quell talk of this season’s derailment with less than the first fifth of the full fixture list out of the way. Benitez, on the other hand, will know his Newcastle team need to start picking up points or face the very real reality of being cut off from the rest of the bottom-half clubs at the base of the table. Only Huddersfield (4) have scored fewer goals than Newcastle (3) this season, and the Magpies are in fact the least creative team as things stand, having fashioned the fewest number of chances in the division this season so far (32).

That said, Tuesday’s 0-0 draw was the first time United have been able to keep a clean sheet at home this season, a stat that will give Newcastle hope.

Squawka score prediction:

Bar Cardiff or Huddersfield, United could not find an opponent lower on confidence right now than Newcastle, who have scored just twice on the road in all competitions this season and have only two away wins in all competitions in 2018. Not since 1999 have Manchester United gone five games without a win, and we predict they will avoid equalling another unwanted record this weekend.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Newcastle United
