So, who’s ready for another weekend of Premier League action? It’s worth making the most of this one as we’ll have to wait two weeks for the next.
The standout fixture of game week eight comes at Anfield, with Liverpool and Manchester City set for their first battle of the season this Sunday.
Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United simply must get three points against Newcastle United in Saturday’s late kick-off.
We’re also being treated to a Friday night match this week, just the second of this season, with Brighton taking on West Ham at the Amex Stadium.
This, of course, means you only have until 7pm on Friday night to make those all important FPL changes.
Caught in two minds over who to bring and who to take out? You’re not alone. We’ve listed one player to pick and one player to sell for each position ahead of GW8. You’re welcome.
The Fantasy Football signings to make:
GK: Joe Hart
Cost: £4.6m
Why? Put simply, the Burnley goalkeeper has more points than any other goalkeeper on FPL this season, that’s despite the Clarets’ shaky start to the season.
Hart has registered save points in every game for Sean Dyche’s side so far this season.
When you add Hart’s very affordable price into the equation and the fact Burnley are playing Huddersfield this weekend, who have only scored three goals all season, then Hart becomes the perfect choice for a goalkeeper away from the big guns in the top six.
DEF: Kieran Trippier
Cost: £6.2m
Why? Trippier looks nailed on to start in Spurs’ home tie against Cardiff City this Saturday, with Serge Aurier still sidelined with an injury.
The England full-back is the most bought defender ahead of game week eight and we can certainly see why, having registered an assist in his last two appearances. In total, Trippier has managed three double-digit scores so far this season.
Spurs are also a solid bet to keep a clean sheet this weekend against a Cardiff City side that sit in 19th position.
MID: Johann Berg Gudmunsson
Cost: £5.9m
Why? Gudmunsson has played a big part in Burnley’s revival this season, with one goal and three assists in his last two game weeks.
Just like Hart, the Icelandic midfielder could be a clever addition to your side, with Burnley hosting Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
He would also make room for the big addition to your squad that you’ve been lining up for a couple of weeks.
FW: Marko Arnautovic
Cost: £7.0m
Why? A no-brainer. The West Ham forward bullied Manchester United last weekend and has four goals and an assist in his last five starts. His minutes-per-goal ratio is second only to Sergio Aguero.
At £7.0m, Arnautovic is a reliable option in attack and leaves room for the likes of Harry Kane, Eden Hazard and Aguero elsewhere.
19 of Arnautovic’s 36 FPL points this season have come away from home and with the Hammers taking on Brighton at the Amex Stadium this week, Arnautovic may well be adding to his points tally in game week eight. Chris Hughton’s side are still yet to keep a clean sheet this season.
The Fantasy Football players to sell:
GK: Petr Cech
Cost: £5.0m
Why? After a more encouraging few weeks in-between the sticks at Arsenal, Cech was forced off with a hamstring injury in the closing stages of the first half against Watford last Saturday.
Bernd Leno is the man who replaced him and a big few weeks lay ahead for the German, who arrived at Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
According to the club’s official website, Cech is likely to return to Arsenal training in three to four weeks and, although the upcoming international break means he won’t miss as many matches as he might another time, he’s still likely to miss the Gunners’ matches with Fulham, Leicester City and Crystal Palace later this month.
If he’s in your starting XI, he simply must come out.
DEF: Jan Vertonghen
Cost: £6.0m
Why? Mauricio Pochettino was a little unhappy with Belgium manager Roberto Martinez on Friday, with the latter telling the media that Vertonghen’s latest injury will keep him sidelined for six weeks.
It seems Spurs were keen to keep that under wraps for the time being, but FPL players aren’t complaining.
The Spurs centre-back was forced off at half-time against Huddersfield last weekend after suffering a hamstring injury.
A potential six-week lay off means the Belgian will be missing a lot of football between now and the end of the year. If he’s in your squad, time to look for options elsewhere.
MID: Christian Eriksen
Cost: £9.2m
Why? Eriksen is another player to have joined the growing injury list at Spurs. The attacking midfielder is currently struggling with an abdominal injury.
However, Eriksen’s national team manager Age Hareide hasn’t given up hope of the Spurs star featuring in Denmark’s upcoming internationals, despite him not being named in their latest squad.
That would suggest that Eriksen may not be too far off a return to action, but even so, we think now is a good time to go separate ways with the 26-year-old.
In six Premier League appearances this season, he has two assists, without registering a single goal. There are cheaper options out there that are performing on a more consistent basis. There’s also a certain Manchester City midfielder who is very close to a return to action. Hint hint.
FW: Sergio Aguero
Cost: £11.4m
Why? We’re fully aware that this one could massively backfire, but if you’re in two minds about whether to swap Aguero out for Harry Kane, we think this could be the week to do it.
Believe it or not, despite scoring 325 goals at club level, the Manchester City forward has never scored at Anfield, which is where he’ll be in action on Sunday afternoon.
He’s played nine matches at Anfield but has failed to score once, attempting 11 shots in total with just three ending up on target. The Argentine played 90 minutes for City in their midweek clash against Hoffenheim and Pep Guardiola recently mentioned that the forward has been playing through a foot injury.
With Spurs hosting Cardiff, this could be the ideal week to make your change.
If you’re feeling a little less bold but still need to move on a forward, maybe Wilfried Zaha fits the bill? Crystal Palace host Wolves this weekend, but are yet to score at home this season, losing two and drawing one of their matches at Selhurst Park. It’s also worth noting that the Eagles will face Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United in quick succession after the international break.
