West Brom's promotion push takes a blow as 'trigger happy' loanee returns to the Premier League

Championship Team of the Season

West Bromwich Albion’s promotion campaign took a hit on Friday as Leicester City announced they will be recalling Harvey Barnes from his loan at the Hawthorns.

The England U21 international has impressed during his time with Darren Moore’s side and Claude Puel has made the decision to bring the midfielder back to Leicester.

Who is Harvey Barnes? Five things you should know…

  1. Harvey Barnes came through the Foxes’ youth academy.
  2. He has been out on loan to MK Dons, Barnsley and West Brom – impressing at each club.
  3. Barnes was joint-top scorer as England U20s won the Toulon Tournament in 2017
  4. The 21-year-old has scored a career-high nine goals this season for the Baggies.
  5. Puel feels the midfielder can play a part and has cut his loan in the West Midlands short.

The 21-year-old will be a massive loss for the Baggies having scored nine times during his loan spell.

West Brom manager Darren Moore has been full of praise for what the youngster has achieved and thinks his time at the Hawthorns has improved him as a player.

“Harvey’s been an excellent player for West Brom, he’s showed the qualities why we brought him to the club,” Moore told the Birmingham Mail.

“We’ve improved him as a player. Today (against Blackburn) he was a constant threat for us and he showed his skill and temperament. He has a goal prowess about him.”

It was not made clear by Leicester whether or not they would be recalling Harvey Barnes when they were quizzed on the subject at the start of the month, but Puel did admit some players would be returning to the King Power Stadium.

“I don’t think there will be a lot of moves, but I think there will be a few adjustments for the team, a few may come back on loan,” said the Leicester Boss.

“The most important thing is to develop this young team.”

However, it was announced on Friday that Leicester had recalled their young star and Claude Puel is confident that he can add something to the team given his excellent progress at Championship level this season.

“He can add to us. I’m happy about his progress. He played very well,” he said speaking about the player’s recall.

“I would like to thank West Brom who gave him good opportunities. It is a good moment for him to come home and help his teammates. He trained and will be available tomorrow.”

Harvey Barnes: The Baggies baller

Harvey Barnes has shown during the first half of the Championship season just how dangerous he can be.

Nine goals from midfield is an impressive return but he also has six assists, meaning no player has been directly involved in more goals for the Baggies than the 21-year-old.

A trigger happy player, no player in England’s top four divisions has let fly more often than Barnes – registering 88 efforts.

Also creating 1.5 chances per game for the Baggies during his loan spell, only Matt Phillips created at a greater rate (2.1).

Barnes was also fouled more times per game (2.2) than any other player in the West Brom squad during his time at the Hawthorns.
