After an enthralling year of World Cup football, Champions League drama and domestic league action across Europe, it is now time to decide who the best coach was.
The candidates for “The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award” have been released and the shortlist includes eleven managers based on their respective achievements during the period from 3 July 2017 to 15 July 2018 inclusive.
The eleven-man shortlist was compiled by a panel of FIFA Legends, including Fabio Capello, Frank Lampard, Kaka, Didier Drogba, Alessandro Nesta and Ronaldo to name a few, and now fans will have the chance to vote for their personal top three, doing so on the FIFA official website.
For “The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award” a ten-person shortlist has been compiled based on achievements from 7 August 2017 to 24 May 2018 inclusive.
So without further ado, here are the candidates.
11. Massimiliano Allegri (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Juventus
Major Honours: Serie A, Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana
Another highly successful season for the Italian as he guided Juventus to a record seventh successive Italian Serie A title, a fourth straight domestic double and also took the Old Lady to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
10. Emma Hayes (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Chelsea
Major Honours: FA Women’s Super League, FA Women’s Cup
Guided Chelsea Women to a league and cup double, while her side also went the entire FA Women’s Super League campaign undefeated. Also took the Blues to the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals.
10. Stanislav Cherchesov (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Russia national team
Major Honours:
Cherchesov enjoyed an exceptional World Cup campaign with Russia, taking the nation to the quarter-finals. He also masterminded the historic victory over Spain in the Round of 16, and humbled Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the Opening Match.
9. Stephan Lerch (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: VfL Wolfsburg
Major Honours: Frauen-Bundesliga, DFB Pokal
Guided VfL Wolfsburg Women to a league and cup double as well as the UEFA Women’s Champions League final.
9. Zlatko Dalic (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Croatia national team
Major Honours:
Salvaged Croatia’s World Cup qualification campaign and then led the nation to their first World Cup Final. They were also one of only three teams to clinch three group wins.
8. Mark Parsons (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Portland Thorns
Major Honours: NWSL Championship
Took his side to victory in the 2017 NWSL Championship and a second-place finish in the league. Thorns won the play-offs after beating North Carolina Courage.
8. Didier Deschamps (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: France national team
Major Honours: World Cup
Deschamps won the World Cup, and in doing so became only the third man to do so as a player and coach. He has also now taken charge of more games for France than any other coach.
7. Reynald Pedros (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Lyon Women
Major Honours: UEFA Women’s Champions League, Division 1 Feminine
Secured a league and UEFA Women’s Champions League double, while Lyon were also unbeaten in the Division 1 Feminine.
7. Pep Guardiola (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Manchester City
Major Honours: Premier League, EFL Cup
Won the Premier League in record-breaking fashion by clinching the title with the most wins ever and the most points ever (100). His side also finished 19 points clear of second-placed Manchester United.
6. Alen Stajcic (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Australia national team
Major Honours:
Took Australia to AFC Women’s Asian Cup final, while his side were also only beaten just twice during the 2017/18 season.
6. Jurgen Klopp (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Liverpool
Major Honours:
Led Liverpool to the UEFA Champions League final while scoring 18 goals in the knockout rounds. The German tactician also secured a top-four finish in the Premier League.
5. Asako Takakura (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Japan national team
Major Honours: AFC Women’s Asian Cup
Took Nadeshiko to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup title after defeating Australia in the final.
5. Roberto Martinez (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Belgium national team
Major Honours:
Took Belgium to their best ever FIFA World Cup finish by beating England in the third-place play-offs. Belgium also finished as the tournament’s top scorers and won six of their seven games all inside 90 minutes.
4. Vadao (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Brazil national team
Major Honours: Copa America Femenina
Clinched the 2018 Copa America Femenina while winning all seven matches and scoring 31 goals in the process.
4. Diego Simeone (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Atletico Madrid
Major Honours: UEFA Europa League
Oversaw Atleti’s UEFA Europa League triumph while also finishing second in La Liga with the best defensive record (just 22 goals conceded) and placing above rivals Real Madrid.
3. Jorge Vilda (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Spain national team
Major Honours: Cyprus Cup
Guided Spain to the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 while winning first six group games, scoring 17 and conceding just once. They also won the 2018 Cyprus Cup.
3. Gareth Southgate (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: England national team
Major Honours:
Took England to their first semi-final fixture in a World Cup since 1990, while also matching their best finish on foreign soil with a fourth-place finish. Also secured qualification to the finals with an unbeaten record.
2. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Switzerland national team
Major Honours:
Switzerland made a brilliant start to qualifying campaign for the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019, winning their first six games, scoring 20 and conceding just three They also finished fourth at 2018 Cyprus Cup.
2. Ernesto Valverde (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Barcelona
Major Honours: La Liga, Copa del Rey
Guided Barca to a league and cup double while losing just the single game en route to La Liga title. The Catalan giants also netted an incredible 99 goals during their league campaign.
1. Sarina Wiegman (The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Dutch national team
Major Honours:
Leeuwinnen made an undefeated start to the Women’s World Cup qualifying, scoring 21 without conceding in their first seven games. The Best FIFA Women’s Coach 2017 also took her side to the Algarve Cup final.
1. Zinedine Zidane (The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2018 award)
Club: Real Madrid
Major Honours: UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, Supercopa de Espana
Guided Real to a third-straight UEFA Champions League title, and became the first coach to win three on the bounce as a result. He also left Madrid with a 70 per cent win ratio.
