Germany confirm Joachim Low will remain as manager despite World Cup group stage exit

The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed Joachim Low will remain in charge of the German national side despite the team’s group stage exit at the 2018 World Cup.

Germany finished bottom of Group F after suffering defeats to Mexico and South Korea either side of a last-gasp victory over Sweden.

Before their elimination in Russia, Germany hadn’t exited a World Cup in the first round since 1938.

As a result, Low’s future was thrown into doubt despite the fact he extended his contract until 2022 just last month.

But the DFB has revealed the 58-year-old will remain in charge following extensive talks.

In an official statement, DFB President Reinhard Grindel said: “We have had a very open and trusting exchange in which we have addressed many points, and we are all convinced that with Jogi Low we have a national coach who will analyse very carefully and take the right steps.

“It would be premature, however, to call in our team a few days after such a tournament, and the coach and Oliver Bierhoff should now take the necessary time to deal with the tournament in a sporting way and to report back ahead of the international match on 6 September against France, when we are challenged in the Nations League, to present a comprehensive analysis.”

Low himself added: “I am very grateful for the confidence that the DFB continues to place in me, and despite the justified criticism of our departure, I also feel general support and encouragement.

“It was important to me, after a few days my disappointment is still huge, but now I want to do the whole set-up with the same motivation. I will analyse together with my team, have discussions and start.

“All this takes time, but it will all happen in time for the start of the new international season in September.”

Low’s Germany tenure so far

Until now, Germany had never departed a major tournament before the semi-final stage under Low’s management.

They finished runners-up at Euro 2008 and reached the semi-finals of Euro 2012 and 2016.

As for World Cups, Low led Germany to a third-place finish in 2010 before winning the competition in Brazil four years ago.

In total, Low has won 108 of his 165 matches in charge of Germany, drawing 30 and losing 27.
