Memphis Depay set to be fined by Lyon after not turning up for training

Lyon will fine Memphis Depay after the winger failed to turn up on the first day of pre-season training, according to manager Bruno Genesio.

Depay joined Lyon from Manchester United in January 2017. He has scored 27 goals in 69 appearances across all competitions for the French club.

Reports in Italy have linked with Depay with a possible summer transfer to AC Milan.

Speculation about a potential exit looks set to increase after Depay failed return to Lyon for the team’s pre-season preparations.

And Lyon boss Genesio has confirmed the 24-year-old will be fined for the misdemeanour.

“I’m happy to see [the squad] again. It is missing only one player out of 27. It’s Memphis,” Genesio said in a press conference, via Lyon’s official Twitter account.

“He will be financially sanctioned on his return. He had five weeks of vacation like the other players.”

Depay made 124 appearances for PSV before joining Manchester United in the summer of 2015.

After scoring 28 goals during his final season at PSV, Depay failed to make an impact at Old Trafford.

He scored seven times in his debut season in England but failed to find the net in the first half of the 2016/17 campaign, leaving for Lyon in the January transfer window.

It remains to be seen whether his absence from Lyon training has anything to do with a desire to leave the club.
