“It’s absolutely pathetic” – Alan Shearer not impressed with Neymar’s World Cup theatrics

Alan Shearer has branded Neymar “magnificent” and “pathetic” in equal measure after the Brazilian’s much-maligned antics against Mexico at the World Cup.

Neymar scored his second goal of the tournament as Brazil booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Mexico in Samara.

But not for the first time in Russia, the Paris-Saint Germain star reacted dramatically to a challenge, appearing to be in serious pain before continuing with no sign of any injury.

Neymar’s ankle was trodden on by Mexico’s Miguel Layun midway through the second half.

And while he was certainly the victim of an offence on Layun’s part, Neymar’s theatrics were heavily criticised.

Asked by Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker if Neymar’s reaction was over the top during the BBC’s post-match coverage, Shearer said: “Over the top? It’s absolutely pathetic.

“There is no doubting the ability of him… he is a magnificent player. But it really is pathetic when he is rolling around as if he is in agony.”

Neymar will be hoping to avoid injuries ahead of Brazil’s quarter-final meeting with Belgium after missing the humiliating 2014 semi-final defeat to Germany.

The 26-year-old has scored 57 goals in 89 appearances for his country – he has found the net twice and provided two assists so far in Russia.
