Belgium forward Dries Mertens has revealed that his desire to “score lots of goals” at the World Cup is partly fuelled by the chance to help his friends win free televisions.

The Napoli star, who scored a cracker in Belgium’s opening game against Panama and also helped his side hit five past Tunisia, said he wants to help his friends win the free televisions which is part of a promotion by electronics company Krefel.

They have offered Belgium customers a full refund on all TV purchases if the national team manage to score 16 goals at the World Cup.

The Red Devils won all three of their Group G matches, scoring nine and conceding only twice, while on Monday night Roberto Martinez’s fired a further three past Japan as they won their Round of 16 clash at the Rostov Arena.

Mertens believes that his side are more than capable of creating chances and is hoping that he can help his friends bag a free TV to boot.

“My friends bought a television, so I am thinking about that,” he said (via the Express).

“With the qualities of Romelu [Lukaku] and Eden [Hazard], we can create a great deal of danger.

“We are doing really well. We like to score a lot of goals.”

Mertens played 65 minutes against Japan with his side trailing Akira Nishino’s men 2-0, though having been replaced by Marouane Fellaini with less than half an hour of the match left, the Europeans went on to win 3-2 with a dramatic last-minute goal.

This has now taken Belgium to 12 goals – just four off the required 16 set by Krefel – though their quarter-final match will now be a clash against tournament favourites Brazil on Friday at the Kazan Arena.
