Jose Mourinho explains Alexis Sanchez absence from Man Utd squad v Brighton

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed Alexis Sanchez was withdrawn from the Man Utd squad to face Brighton & Hove Albion this afternoon due to a late injury.

A regular starter for Mourinho’s side since his move from Premier League rivals Arsenal back in January, Sanchez’s absence from today’s match down on the south coast came as a surprise to most.

Speaking to reporters before kick-off at the Amex Stadium, Mourinho confirmed that the Chilean international would not be involved in today’s fixture, stating that a minor problem has meant the Red Devils will look to utilise another of their attacking threats.

“Alexis was going to play but he had a little problem, so we had to decide to give an opportunity to another attacking player,” said Mourinho, as reported but the club’s official Twitter account.

In his place, Mourinho has brought Romelu Lukaku back into the starting line-up after allowing the player further rest following his successful World Cup campaign with Belgium this summer.

Also returning is Anthony Martial. The French winger has long sought a regular place in the Manchester United starting eleven and now has his opportunity to prove any doubters wrong and put the pre-season scuffle with his manager, which resulted in a fine, behind him.

When explaining why Martial had been picked, Mourinho said: “We know Anthony [Martial] well and you can expect always good things from him. He can find that stability that makes great players, we try to help him and he’s working well.”

No Sanchez – Fantasy football fans furious

There is no doubt Sanchez can do the damage on the pitch, hence why he is picked in many fantasy football teams across the world.

The late news of Sanchez’s absence did not impress many who had put their faith – and points – on the line in his name.

Others are excited for Martial to showcase his talents.
