Jose Mourinho: Man City have shown you cannot buy class

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says that Manchester City cannot buy class following comments made about his tactics in City’s recently released documentary ‘All or Nothing: Manchester City’.

The documentary was released on Friday. The second episode of the eight-part series focuses on City’s victory against United at Old Trafford last season.

The script read by its narrator, Sir Ben Kingsley, takes aim at Mourinho’s tactics, characterising the fixture as a battle between two contrasting football philosophies: “Guardiola versus Mourinho once more; possession versus defence; attacking football versus ‘park-the-bus’,” ran the programme’s narration.

Asked about the comments directed at him in the series, Mourinho responded candidly to Sky Sports: “You can have a fantastic movie while respecting others.

“You don’t need to be disrespectful to have a fantastic movie. You can be a rich club and buy the best players in the world but you cannot buy class and they showed that clearly, that was really obvious.”

Mourinho added: “Last season, we put ourselves in a difficult position because to do better we can only finish first.”

In the documentary, City manager Pep Guardiola spoke of how his biggest challenge will be replacing United as England’s most dominant side.

“We have neighbours who, for 15 or 20 years, have always won. I think my biggest challenge as a manager is to change that,” Guardiola said.

United have arguably already surrendered their status as England’s most dominant side, having not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson departed the club at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Mourinho believes that the media reaction to his side’s finish in the league last season has been disproportionate considering, the Red Devils ended the season in second place.

He added: “When I read sometimes and watch sometimes, it looks like we finished sixth or seventh and everybody did better than us. We finished second”

Hinting at the difficulties the Portuguese tactician has faced during the summer’s transfer window, where Brazilian midfielder Fred was United’s only high-profile signing, Mourinho claims this season will be especially difficult due to the investment other sides have made over the summer.

“Liverpool are trying to win the title with their amazing investment,” Mourinho added.

“Chelsea have a fantastic squad, Manchester City have a fantastic squad too, Tottenham made an incredible investment by keeping their players, that’s the best investment you can make.

“They could be spending £200m but if they lose Harry Kane or Christian Eriksen… the biggest investment was keeping all their best players. Arsenal will be better even though they lost their first match.

“I think it’s going to be a very hard season.”

United kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford. They will head to the Falmer Stadium on Sunday to play their second league game against Brighton & Hove Albion.
