Liverpool can “dominate” England if they replace Lovren, says Micky Quinn

Liverpool can be the dominant force in English and world football if they replace Dejan Lovren, according to former Newcastle United striker Micky Quinn.

The Reds played some of the most attractive football in Europe last season, scoring 84 goals in the Premier League alone, and reached a Champions League final for the first time since 2007 – losing 3-1 to Real Madrid.

And they have strengthened very well in the summer, with the likes of Naby Keita, Fabinho, Alisson and Xherdan Shaqiri bolstering their squad.

However, despite signing Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk in January, Quinn – also a boyhood Liverpool fan – believes they still need another top quality centre-back.

He told talkSport: “I’m excited now for this coming season.

“Don’t forget we got Virgil van Dijk in, in January, so he’s bedded in now.

“We’ve got goals up front, a midfield to die for, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] at right-back and [Andy] Robertson at left-back, and a goalkeeper at last!

“Dejan Lovren is the weakest link. If they got a centre-back to partner Van Dijk, then I think it would be world domination for Liverpool Football Club.”

Lovren silencing the critics

The 46-time capped Croatian defender is known for making the odd costly blunder and, if he is to truly silence his critics, will want to tighten up his game for Liverpool in the coming season.

However, Lovren has publicly dismissed his critics this summer, citing the fact that he has reached a Champions League final and World Cup final in quick succession as an advert for his quality.

And since the arrival of van Dijk at Anfield in January, Lovren’s game has undoubtedly improved.

The ex-Lyon defender won more aerial duels (104) and made more interceptions (38) than any other Liverpool player in the Premier League last season.
