Man City and PSG are behind the transfer “madness” – Rummenigge

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has blamed Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain for inflating the football transfer market.

Both clubs, their nation’s current league champions, are bankrolled by wealthy owners from the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi United Group) and Qatar (Qatar Sports Investments) respectively.

Last summer, Neymar became the world’s most expensive footballer when he swapped the Camp Nou for Paris, after the Ligue 1 powerhouse activated his £198 million buyout clause, pushing the investment on transfers made by QSi since their 2011 takeover to over £800m which has unsettled Rummenigge, who doesn’t want to join this “madness” in order to win the European Cup.

“He [Guardiola] said they originally planned to buy a few more players but decided against it because they no longer want to be part of the madness,” he told Merkur.

“I was a bit surprised to hear this at first, but then I thought it would indeed be wonderful if this statement were to be true until the English window closes.

“City, PSG – they’ve always been the global inflaters. Not Real [Madrid], who have spent next to nothing in the past years, which is proof you don’t have to join the madness to win the Champions League.

“That’s also our path. It’s our goal to again lift the Champions League trophy, rather sooner than later.”

City and PSG this summer

Naturally, both clubs, seeking to become European champions, are strengthening their squads this summer.

City though, have only made one major acquisition – bringing Riyad Mahrez from Leicester for a reported £60m (a club record transfer) – while completing the signing of young Dutch centre-back Philippe Sandler who is unlikely to feature in the forthcoming season.

As for PSG, they have a new manager, Thomas Tuchel succeeding Unai Emery, but have been relatively quiet in the transfer market as well.

Gianluigi Buffon arrived on a free transfer from Juventus and Monaco received the £166m fee promised after acquiring the services of Kylian Mbappé initially on a season-long loan last season.
