Jose Mourinho backs Maurizio Sarri to succeed at Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has said the foundations are there for new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri to succeed at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea appointed Sarri last month as the successor to Antonio Conte, who led the Blues to FA Cup glory by beating Mourinho’s Manchester United in last season’s final.

Chelsea failed to qualify for the Champions League and Conte was replaced by Sarri, who led Napoli to a second-place finish in Serie A last term.

Mourinho spent over five years at Chelsea across two separate spells, winning three Premier League titles, three League Cups and one FA Cup.

And the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss believes Sarri has the potential do “good work” at his old club.

“I don’t know him,” Mourinho told beIN Sports, according to Football Italia.

“When I was in Italy from 2008-10, he was not in Serie A. I never met him or played against him. I just follow football and lately the good work he did with Napoli.

“In England, all the good managers have the desire to come. It’s a crazy competition with a high level so I think every manager has the dream to come so he had the chance to come.

“He has a fantastic team, fantastic players and squad – I think he has conditions to do good work.”

Mourinho left Chelsea for the second time midway through the 2015/16 campaign after winning his third Premier League title the season prior.

The Portuguese coach has won a League Cup and the Europa League since joining Manchester United in 2016.

Sarri is yet to win any major honours as a manager but was named Serie A Coach of the Year in 2016/17 and has been widely praised for his attractive style of football.
