Mourinho sounds like someone trying to “engineer” an exit – Redknapp

During a summer of positivity for Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola at Liverpool and Manchester City, Jose Mourinho has cut a frustrated figure at Manchester United.

The 55-year-old Portuguese has bemoaned a lack of incoming transfers at Old Trafford, as well as a long injury list and player absentees through the World Cup and personal reasons.

And ex-Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Jamie Redknapp, believes Mourinho may be trying to engineer an exit from the Red Devils.

Speaking in his column in the Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “Since arriving at Old Trafford, he has strengthened almost every position in the team.

“Yet throughout United’s pre-season tour, all Mourinho has done is moan. He sounds like someone trying to engineer an exit.

“Alarm bells will be ringing in the United boardroom. Why back him with another £300m if they are soon to be faced with having to find another manager?”

However, Redknapp can also understand why Mourinho is coming across very cynically in his pre-season press conferences, adding: “I can see both sides of the stand-off between him and Ed Woodward.

“Jose will have seen rivals City and Liverpool back their managers in the transfer window.

“He will feel he deserves to be treated the same way, after finishing second and reaching the final of the FA Cup.

“The problem is that having already spent £360million in the past two seasons, Mourinho has gone into this summer demanding another five recruits.”

Mourinho’s exit strategy

Despite winning league titles, Champions Leagues and domestic cups at most of the clubs he has managed, Jose Mourinho has only lasted longer than three years once at any of the seven clubs he has managed.

His first spell was way back in 2000, a 20 game-stint at Benfica from which he then moved to União de Leiria. His 45% win ratio there earned him an opportunity at Portuguese giants, Porto, where he announced himself to the footballing world with an unlikely Champions League win in 2004.

This earned him a move to Chelsea and, in his first three-year spell at Stamford Bridge, he won two league titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup.

However, after a series of disagreements with Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, Mourinho left the club by mutual consent shortly into his fourth season and went on to win another Champions League and two Italian league titles during a two-year stint at Inter Milan.

Fulfilling a personal ambition, Mourinho then moved to Real Madrid in 2010, winning a Copa Del Rey and La Liga title in his three years with Los Blancos.

Mourinho left Real Madrid to rejoin Chelsea, delivering another Premier League title in his second season back in London as well as a League Cup. However, a run of poor results in his third year lead to him again leaving the club by mutual consent – he took over at Manchester United in May 2016, where he has won a League Cup and Europa League.
