Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted he is in awe of Harry Kane‘s mentality after the Englishman revealed his World Cup disappointment.
Kane spent the summer helping England reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia, with his six goals in six matches enough to ensure he won the highly-coveted Golden Boot award for most goals scored at the tournament.
England defied expectations to reach the final four, and Kane certainly proved that he has the ability to perform in big tournaments.
However, Kane – who has 19 goals in 30 England internationals and a mightily impressive 140 goals in 213 games throughout all competitions for Spurs – has told his club boss how, despite being the most prolific scorer, he still returned home upset with his performances in Russia.
“He’s very disappointed about his World Cup,” Pochettino told reporters (via Goal).
“He arrived back in London [from Russia] on the Sunday, and on the Tuesday he was at the training ground, spending five hours with myself and Jesus [Perez, Pochettino’s assistant].
“I congratulated him and he said: ‘No, gaffer, I am really disappointed, I should have scored more goals’.
“I said: ‘But you won the Golden Boot’. He said: ‘Yes, but gaffer, I’m disappointed’.
“Being fourth and reaching the semi-finals was not enough [for Kane]. I love, love, love this energy and desire, that it’s not enough to be fourth in the World Cup. It’s not enough to finish second or third or play in the Champions League.
“I love it when a player feels that desire and wants to come in and spend time with us after the World Cup.
“All the people praise him and he’s a big star, but Tuesday he was there sharing time with us. That is so very Harry.”
Tottenham Hotspur’s first Premier League match of the season will see them take on Newcastle this Saturday at St James’ Park.
