Porto captain Hector Herrera will be staying at the club according to his agent, despite intense speculation linking midfielder with a move to the Serie A.
Herrera, 28, has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the past, but the latest clubs who have shown an apparent interest are Roma and Inter Milan.
However, the Mexican midfielder looks set to extend his five-year stint at the Estadio do Dragao despite his contract expiring at the end of the season, after his agent cooled rumours on a departure from the Iberian Peninsula.
“He won’t leave Porto this season, he wants to respect his contract until it expires,” Gabriel Moraes told O Jogo (via Football Italia).
“There’s been some contact, but no-one was able to reach an agreement with Porto and Hector.
“He respects the decision made by the club. Right now he’s totally focused on the season with Porto, he’s the captain and he’ll have many important matches to play.
“There’s never been a meeting with [Julen] Lopetegui. Real Madrid have a very strong midfield and it’s not an area where they’re looking for reinforcements.
“My job is to talk to Porto and try solving the situation, and that’s what I’ll do. There’s a lot of time until January and we’ll meet on several occasions to talk about his future.”
Signed from boyhood club Pachuca for a reported £7m in 2013, Herrera has since amassed 199 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 27 goals in that time and providing 32 assists.
The box-to-box midfielder helped guide Porto to their first league title since 2013 last season, and last month he lifted the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira for the second time in his Porto career after the Dragons beat Desportivo das Aves 3-1 at the Estadio Municipal de Aveiro.
Herrera also played a star role for his homeland in the World Cup over the summer, starting in all four of Mexico’s matches, as the nation beat Germany and reached the round-of-16.
Porto side could only muster a draw in their first Champions League Group D match against Schalke on Tuesday, coming back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with the German club.
Next up for Sergio Conceicao’s men is a trip to the Estadio do Bonfim as Porto take on Vitoria de Setubal in the Primeira Liga on Saturday.
