Chelsea have to keep their feet on the ground despite perfect start, says David Luiz

Chelsea defender David Luiz has warned his team-mates not to get complacent after winning their opening five Premier League matches.

Luiz, 31, has resurrected his Chelsea career after falling out of favour with Antonio Conte last season, starting every match under new coach Maurizio Sarri this term.

The Brazilian has been a vital cog in the Italian tactician’s machine, forming a solid centre-back partnership with Antonio Rudiger as the club sit atop of the Premier League.

Despite this, Luiz has urged his team-mates to keep their feet firmly on the ground and take each game as it comes with plenty more domestic and European action awaiting them this season.

Talking to the club’s official website, Luiz spoke of his excitement for the coming months, but remained wary of the road ahead.

He said: “In the Premier League you have to think game by game. Chelsea is a big club which will always fight for titles. It doesn’t matter the name of the competition.

“This year it’s a great opportunity for us if we continue in this way, but it’s too early. We have to keep our feet on the ground and work every day.”

Sarri came to English football over the summer with the Blues in a state of flux as relations with his predecessor spiralled out of control, though he has acquitted himself expertly to the pace of the league.

Few would have tipped the west London club to clinch the Premier League title before the season, but the club remain firmly in the mix even in these early stages.

If Sarri is to have any chance of achieving domestic dominance this season, then he will need the experience of seasoned professionals and past winners, and Luiz – who won the title in 2017 – knows just what it takes to achieve such a feat.

The former PSG defender was instrumental during that 2016/17 title-winning season, but quickly fell down the pecking order last campaign, though he has now rediscovered his form and he further gave a gushing account of his new manager’s philosophy.

He added: “I love his philosophy. It’s amazing. Before everything he is a great person, as a human he talks with us every single day, he enjoys what he does.

“He is a guy who really loves football, and it’s always special to work with people like him.”

Chelsea face PAOK in the Europa League on Thursday before taking on West Ham United on Sunday.
