The nominations for The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award and The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018 awards have been officially announced and there are some notable candidates.  

A ten-man shortlist for The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award has been compiled based on the respective achievements of each nomination between the period from 3 July 2017 to 15 July 2018 inclusive.

Meanwhile a ten-woman shortlist for The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018 award has also been compiled based on achievements from the 7 August 2017 to 24 May 2018 inclusive.

Each shortlist has been assembled by a team of experts, including the likes of Didier Drogba and Kaka for the FIFA Men’s Player award, while the Mia Hamm and Sun Wen are just some of the names of the panel for the FIFA Women’s Player award.

So who made the cut?

10. Cristiano Ronaldo (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: Real Madrid & Portugal

Major honours: UEFA Super Cup, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup

Ronaldo won the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid, while finishing as the competition’s top scorer (15). He also clinched the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2017.

10. Lucy Bronze (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

Club: Olympique Lyonnais

Major honours: UEFA Women’s Champions League, Division 1 Feminine

Won the league and the UEFA Women’s Champions League double in her debut season in France. Also helped England remain unbeaten in Women’s World Cup qualifying during 2017/18, and was named in UEFA Women’s Champions League squad of the tournament.

9. Kevin De Bruyne (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: Manchester City & Belgium

Major honours: Premier League, EFL Cup

Played an instrumental role as Manchester City won the Premier League and EFL Cup, while providing the most assists during 2017/18 Premier League campaign (18). Also helped Belgium clinch bronze in the World Cup.

9. Pernille Harder (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

Club: Wolfsburg

Major honours: Frauen-Bundesliga, DFB Pokal

Helped Wolfsburg lift Frauen-Bundesliga while scoring league-high 17 goals. She also scored eight in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, including one in the final, and was named in the UEFA Women’s Champions League squad of the tournament.

8. Antoine Griezmann (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: Atletico Madrid & France

Major honours: UEFA Europa League, World Cup

Won the FIFA World Cup with France and also scored in the Final. He was also awarded the adidas Silver Boot and adidas Bronze Ball, and with Atleti he lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy.

8. Ada Hegerberg (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

Club: Olympique Lyonnais

Major honours: UEFA Women’s Champions League, Division 1 Feminine

Guided Lyon to win Ligue 1 Feminine, while scoring 31 goals in just 20 appearances. She also won the UEFA Women’s Champions League and set a new competition record of 15 goals in just one campaign, and was named in UEFA Women’s Champions League squad of the tournament as a result.

7. Eden Hazard (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: Chelsea & Belgium

Major honours: FA Cup

Helped Belgium to bronze at Russia 2018, while also claiming the FIFA World Cup adidas Silver Ball. Further won the English FA Cup with Chelsea.

7. Amandine Henry (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

 

Club: Olympique Lyonnais

Major honours: UEFA Women’s Champions League, Division 1 Feminine

Helped Lyon clinch the Ligue 1 Feminine as well as the UEFA Women’s Champions League. She also scored in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final, and was named in UEFA Women’s Champions League squad of the tournament.

6. Harry Kane (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: Tottenham Hotspur & England

Major honours: 

Kane clinched the adidas Golden Boot at Russia 2018, while also helping guide England to their best World Cup finish since 1990. He also scored 30 goals during 2017/18 English Premier League season.

6. Samantha Kerr (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

 

Club: Sky Blue FC & Australia

Major honours: 

She was the top scorer in the 2017 NWSL with 17 goals for Sky Blue FC. She also helped Australia to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup final, scoring three goals, while she further netted 11 goals in 14 games for Matildas in the 2017/18 season.

5. Kylian Mbappe (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: PSG & France

Major honours: Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, World Cup

Mbappe secured the FIFA World Cup and FIFA World Cup Best Young Player Award, while also becoming only the second youngest player after Pele to score in a World Cup Final. He also clinched a domestic treble during his debut season at Paris Saint-Germain.

5. Saki Kumagai (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

 

Club: Olympique Lyonnais

Major honours: UEFA Women’s Champions League, Division 1 Feminine

Captained Japan to a AFC Women’s Asian Cup win, while also winning the league and UEFA Women’s Champions League with Lyon. Further named in UEFA Women’s Champions League squad of the tournament.

4. Lionel Messi (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: Barcelona & Argentina

Major honours: La Liga, Copa del Rey

Messi won a league and cup double with Barcelona and finished as La Liga’s top goalscorer (34), while also clinching the joint-top assists for the 2017/18 La Liga season (12).

4. Dzsenifer Marozsan (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

 

Club: Olympique Lyonnais

Major honours: UEFA Women’s Champions League, Division 1 Feminine

She won a league and UEFA Women’s Champions League double with Lyon, and also captained Germany to five wins in six Women’s World Cup qualifying games. She was also named in UEFA Women’s Champions League squad of the tournament.

3. Luka Modric (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: Real Madrid & Croatia

Major honours: UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup

Took Croatia to their first ever FIFA World Cup Final, and won the adidas Golden Ball at Russia 2018. He also helped Real Madrid win the Champions League final and the FIFA Club World Cup.

3. Marta (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

 

Club: Orlando Pride & Brazil

Major honours: Copa America Femenina

She scored 13 goals, and provided six assists in helping Orlando Pride to the NWSL play-offs. She was also named in the NWSL Best XI and the league’s team of the season, while she further captained Brazil to a Copa America Femenina title – winning all seven games at the finals.

2. Mohamed Salah (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: Liverpool & Egypt

Major honours: 

Help guide Liverpool to UEFA Champions League final in his debut season, while also scoring 32 goals during English Premier League campaign, setting new scoring record in the process. He also finished joint-second in 2017/18 Champions League scoring chart.

2. Megan Rapinoe (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

 

Club: Seattle Reign FC & USA

Major honours: SheBelieves Cup

She helped USA to the 2018 SheBelieves Cup title, while scoring the winner against Germany in the opener. She further played a crucial part in an unbeaten run of 12 USA games without defeat from September 2017 to April 2018. She also scored 12 goals in 18 NWSL games for Seattle Reign in the 2017 campaign.

1. Raphael Varane (The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award)

Club: Real Madrid & France

Major honours: UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, World Cup

Won the World Cup with France at Russia 2018, helped his side keep four clean sheets in seven World Cup games. He also lifted the 2017 Club World Cup and 2018 Champions League with Real Madrid.

1. Wendie Renard (The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2018)

 

Club: Olympique Lyonnais

Major honours: UEFA Women’s Champions League, Division 1 Feminine

She captained Olympique Lyonnais to a league and UEFA Women’s Champions League double and was also named in UEFA Women’s Champions League team of the tournament.
