Every player rated as Liverpool crush Napoli 5-0 on Alisson’s debut

Liverpool‘s pre-season preparations hit another level as they thumped Serie A runners-up Napoli 5-0 in Dublin.

It took Liverpool just four minutes to open the scoring as James Milner beat Orestis Karnezis from range following a good start. And they doubled their lead just moments later through Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Reds put Napoli to the sword further after half-time, with Mohamed Salah, Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno all finding the net.

Here’s how the players rated.

Liverpool

Alisson – 6 – Had a good start to life at Liverpool without having too much to do. Made a good save in the first half and was confident from set pieces.

Nathaniel Clyne – 7 – As part of Liverpool’s high press, Clyne was alert to win the ball back on the edge of Napoli’s box in the build up to Milner’s goal.

Joe Gomez – 6 – Had very little to do in the match with Liverpool in contract, but looked good when called upon.

Virgil van Dijk – 6 – Was strong in the air when required but otherwise untroubled throughout.

Andrew Robertson – 7 – Defensively strong from the start and slowly grew into the game offensively but saw most of his side’s work coming down the other flank.

Georginio Wijnaldum – 7 – Back in the team after a brief injury layoff, Wijnaldum did well early on to beat the goalkeeper in the air to score his header.

James Milner – 8 – Many may have thought Milner’s Liverpool career to be over but he gave Jurgen Klopp something to think about. Opened scoring with well-taken shot before setting up Wijnaldum with a good cross. Would have probably played longer but for a head injury.

Naby Keita – 6 – Had a quiet game compared to his previous pre-season performances in the first-half but was still a threat at times and will still be one of the best signings of the summer.

Mohamed Salah – 7 – Constantly troubled the the Napoli defenders throughout and got his customary goal in the second-half with a fine curling effort into the top left corner.

Roberto Firmino – 7 – On his return to Liverpool after the World Cup, Firmino picked up from where he left off with the Reds. Dropped into midfield often to pick the ball up and quickly move it on.

Sadio Mane – 7 – Showed good awareness to cut ball back to Milner for the opening goal and was a threat down the left.

Substitutes:

Xherdan Shaqiri (For Firmino 45) – 7 – Come on at half-time and rarely stuck to one position, testing himself across the attacking trio.

Fabinho (For Milner 56) – 6 – Looked good in midfield though did not have to overwork himself with Liverpool well in command.

Daniel Sturridge (For Salah 62) – 8 – Had two golden opportunities to extend Liverpool’s lead after coming on, first seeing his effort saved before seeing his chip go wide. But got his goal shortly after, finishing well after a rebound. Then set up Moreno.

Alberto Moreno (For Robertson 62) – 7 – Added to Liverpool’s lead with a thundering effort from a wide angle.

Dominic Solanke (For Mane 62) – 6 – Showing some signs of promise, more than he had in previous appearances but was outshone in attack by Sturridge.

Curtis Jones (For Wijnaldum 62) – 6 – Promising in midfield after coming on, helping to control the game.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (For Clyne 62) – 6 – In his first match back after the World Cup, the right-back had little to do but looked confident.

Divock Origi (For Keita 71) – 5 – Had a good chance to get on the scoresheet but saw his effort saved – though it did result in Sturridge’s goal. Otherwise quiet.

Nathaniel Phillips (For Gomes 76) – 6 – Like Gomes, had very little to do at the back as most of the game was played in midfield. Did preserve the clean sheet with a good last gasp block in injury time.

Napoli

Orestis Karnezis – 2 – Karnezis must hate Liverpool, conceding 10 goals in his past two games against the Reds. For two of the Reds’ five he was not to blame but the goalkeeper really should have done better as a whole.

Elseid Hysajs – 5 – A quiet first half in both defence and attack as both sides favoured the other flank. Up against tough opposition in Andy Robertson.

Raul Albiol – 5 – Tried to spread the ball out for Napoli to create but he could not really push his side on. Unlucky not to have won a foul inside his own box in the build up to Salah’s goal.

Kalidou Koulibaly – 5 – Known for his composure and passing ability, Koulibaly looked a bit weak in trying to bring the ball out from the back under pressure.

Sebastiano Luperto – 5 – Had the horror task of defending against Mohamed Salah but did well enough, restricting the Egyptian’s damage before coming off at half-time.

Fabian – 4 – The game went past Fabian at times as Liverpool dominated in the midfield.

Allan – 5 – Helped Napoli’s midfield tick as they slowly grew into the game without doing anything too spectacular.

Marek Hamsik – 4 – Playing in the deeper role left by Jorginho, Hamsik just did not work out in the first half against Liverpool. The game, and many Liverpool players, went by him unnoticed which helped the Reds control the game.

Jose Callejon – 6 – Made a few good runs off the ball but did not do too much with it. Had a goal unfairly ruled out for offside shortly before half-time.

Arkadiusz Milik – 4 – After barely having a touch, had Napoli’s first effort on goal but his shot was well wide.

Lorenzo Insigne – 5 – A danger in attack, but he was poor on the edge of his own area, losing the ball to Clyne in the build up to Liverpool’s first goal.

Substitutes:

Mario Rui (For Luperto 45) – 4 – Allowed Salah space inside the box for the Egyptian’s goal, waiting for the referee’s whistle rather than playing on following a tough challenge on Albiol by Mane.

Nikola Maksimovic (For Albiol 59) – 3 – Brought on with the game at 3-0, Maksimovic was part of the defensive collapse for Napoli, allowing two more goals to be conceded.

Simone Verdi (For Insigne 62) – 4 – Could not bring something new to the Napoli side after coming on.

Adam Ounas (For Callejon 62) – 4 – Despite having 30 minutes on the pitch, Ounas’ arrival was too late for him to have any influence with Liverpool firm in control.

Roberto Inglese (For Milik 62) – 4 – Had as little luck in attack as the man he replaced with Napoli looking out of sorts.

Amados Diawara (For Hamsik 62) – 4 – Held back in midfield but had little room to show his capabilities.

Marko Rog (For Fabian 62) – 4 – Overrun by Liverpool’s young midfielders after coming on.

Vlad Chiriches (For Koulibaly 72) – 3 – Formed a poor partnership alongside Maksimovic, with two goals being conceded within five minutes of his substitution.
