Liverpool defeat “burns,” says Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti after 5-0 thrashing

Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti appeared rattled in the aftermath of the Partenopei’s 5-0 thrashing to Liverpool in Dublin.

Goals from James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Mohamed Salah, Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno sealed the victory for the Reds on Saturday, while new goalkeeper Alisson completed his first appearance with a clean sheet.

The Brazilian No.1 had little to do as Napoli suffered a resounding defeat in the Republic of Ireland capital, and the loss appears to have unsettled their new boss Ancelotti.

“To lose always burns and to concede five goals must bother us,” Ancelotti said in his Sky Sports interview (via Four Four Two).

“We tried to play it openly, with the guys we are doing a job a bit different than in the past and we have lost the ball so many times.

“After the difficult start we were at their level, but we were exposed to the counter-attack, which is their best weapon.

“It takes some time for things to become natural and I also believe that some things have been done well.

“We could have played a more defensive game but I did not want to do it, we do not need it, because we have to build against a team like Liverpool.”

Napoli forced to explain why Ancelotti held no post-match press conference

Ancelotti will be feeling the pressure following his side’s calamitous defeat on Friday night. The Partneopei’s former coach Maurizio Sarri left behind a solid structure at the club and a side that was a whisker away from clinching the Serie A title last season before they lost their nerve at the last hurdles.

The Italian did not attend post-match media duties, which many attributed to his side’s heavy defeat, and his club was forced to scramble together an explanation for his absence.

“Mr Carlo Ancelotti did not attend the post press conference after Liverpool v Napoli for a simple reason: it was not planned,” the club posted on Twitter.

“The only [media] activity in the program was the interview with Sky Sport and has been respected.”

Napoli open their Serie A campaign against Lazio on August 18.
