Real Betis manager Quique Setien would welcome Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos back to the club with open arms.
Ceballos, 21, parted company with Los Verdiblancos last season after three productive seasons at the Benito Villamarin, but the Spain U21 international was unable to supplant Real Madrid’s midfield tripartite of Casemiro, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
As a result, the Utrera-born midfielder could only muster four La Liga starts, and a further eight appearances off the bench, leading to speculation that he could leave the Spanish capital after just one season.
A return to Seville could now be on the cards, and manager Setien has declared his fervent interest in bringing Ceballos back to his boyhood club.
“Ceballos? You can never say it’s dead, we would love it if he were to join us,” Setien said on Cadena Cope’s Tiempo de Juego programme, via Football Espana.
Betis reportedly tabled an offer to bring the midfielder back to the club on loan during the winter transfer window, but Spanish FA rules obstructed the deal as he had already changed registration within the top flight that season.
Ceballos’ breakthrough season came during the 2014/15 campaign when Betis were plying their trade in the Spanish second tier, and he helped guide the club to promotion from the Segunda Division, featuring 33 times and scoring five goals.
In La Liga, the midfielder played 64 matches for Betis, scoring twice, before securing a £16m transfer to the Bernabeu last summer.
Previous manager Zinedine Zidane was incessant in his selection of Kroos, Modric and Casemiro, but the Frenchman’s successor Julen Lopetegui has a reputation for promoting young Spanish talent and could be tempted in to give the midfielder a more prominent role this term.
