Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has revealed his excitement towards teammates Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard returning to the club this summer.
Hazard and Courtois helped guide Belgium to a third-place finish in the World Cup – the nation’s most successful campaign ever at the quadrennial tournament – and the pair are currently taking some time off before returning to pre-season training.
The Blues are touring Australia as they prepare for life under new manager Maurizio Sarri, but Hazard and Courtois have been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with Real Madrid the most likely destination.
However, Alonso has revealed that he is unmoved by the rumours associating two of the club’s key players with transfers to the Spanish giants.
“I am not even thinking about that. They are Chelsea players and I am looking forward to seeing them after their holidays,” Spanish defender Alonso told Sky Sports News regarding the possibility of the players leaving.
“They are top players and very important for us. Every season with Chelsea, we have to fight for every competition and every game and we will go for it.”
Another notable absentee in Australia is Willian, who was an integral part of Brazil’s quarter-final finish in the World Cup, and the west London club have reportedly turned down several offers from Barcelona for the winger.
Sarri enjoyed his first win as Chelsea boss, beating Perth Glory 1-0 in a friendly on Monday, and Alonso lauded the more attacking style of play under the former Napoli manager.
He added: “We are working on some new things: a new formation and a new style. He wants us to press high and he wants the team together for possession of the ball.
“A lot of the things we have just started working [on] but it is looking good.
“I don’t have to run as much as last year! It’s good, more for us to defend and when I can, try and help the team in attack.”
Chelsea next face Inter Milan and Arsenal in the International Champions Cup before locking horns with Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 5.
Sarri will have his first taste of Premier League action when the Blues tee off against Huddersfield on August 11.
