Man Utd midfielder Andreas Pereira gets first senior Brazil call-up despite Belgium ties

Manchester United midfielder, Andreas Pereira, has seemingly put doubt about his international future to bed with a call-up to Brazil’s senior team. 

Pereira, 22, was born in Belgium but has a Brazilian father and had represented Belgium 27 times up to U17 level before switching his allegiance to Brazil in 2014.

Since then, he has played eight times for their U20 squad, as well as picking up another cap for their U23 side.

The attacking midfielder has previously spent time out on loan from United, most recently at Valencia last season, but impressed manager Jose Mourinho during pre-season – so much so that he earned a place in the Red Devil’s starting XI in their Premier League opener against Leicester City last week.

Brazil face the USA and El Salvador next month and, with the likes of Man City’s Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho not making the squad, Pereira is very much part of an experimental line-up from manager Tite – Flamengo forward Lucas Paqueta has also been included, as well as a recall for Liverpool’s Fabinho.

Until this point, it had been unclear which national Pereira would state his allegiance to, with Roberto Martinez recently expressing a desire to call him up to the Belgium squad.

However, the midfielder has made his choice and can now look forward to trying to break into the Selecao starting XI alongside the likes of Neymar and Philippe Coutinho.
