La Liga have agreed a sensational deal that will see at least one league match being hosted by either the United States or Canada in a 15-year joint venture that will seek to advertise the Spanish top division across North America.
Although specific details aren’t finalised as of yet – with who would be involved and where – Relevent – a multinational media, sports and entertainment group – have revealed that they have an agreement with La Liga to promote and home Spanish football on American or Canadian soil.
The agreement states that at least one La Liga match will be played across the Atlantic, making it the first European league fixture to be played outside of the continent.
Speaking to reporters (via the Mirror), Relevent chairman Stephen Ross revealed how excited he was for this partnership to begin.
He said: “This extraordinary joint venture is the next giant leap in growing soccer’s popularity in North America.
“This unique relationship will create new opportunities for millions of North American soccer fans to experience the most passionate, exciting, and highest level of soccer in the world.”
Branded as one of – if not the – biggest league in the world, with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid all contesting for the major honours at stake, the movement is expected to captivate American audiences on a larger scale, with the likes of Lionel Messi playing competitive football in the US for the first time in Barca colours.
In fact, Real and Barca are the two teams understandably sighted as the first teams that are wanted for this new regime, with their fanbase and popularity renowned for their worldwide appeal.
