Fifa rankings released with England sixth whilst Germany drop to 15th

England find themselves sixth in the latest Fifa world rankings whilst Germany have spectacularly fallen out of the top 10.

Gareth Southgate’s men were one of the success stories at this summer’s World Cup by reaching the semi-finals against all odds, and their run sees them rise six places in the world rankings which Fifa have compiled using a new formula approved in June.

Germany, in contrast, endured a torrid summer. The 2014 World Cup champions, who many picked to defend their crown, were bundled out of the tournament in the group phase and suffered losses to Mexico and South Korea, while it took a stunning 90th minute free-kick by Toni Kroos to salvage a win against Sweden.

As a consequence, they’ve fallen 14 places after being ranked second last month, it’s their lowest position in more than a decade since being placed 22nd in March 2006.

Elsewhere, newly-crowned world champions France head the pile and runners-up Croatia are on the rise, moving up 16 places. However, they are not the biggest movers, that honour belongs to Russia – eliminated by Croatia in the quarter-finals – who go up 21 spots.
