Man Utd defender Victor Lindelof reveals World Cup has given him more confidence ahead of new season

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof believes his performances at the World Cup this summer can help kick-start his career at Old Trafford.

Lindelof, 24, started in four matches for Sweden during the prestigious tournament as the Scandinavian nation reached the quarter-finals, keeping two clean sheets along the way.

The former Benfica centre-back is now hoping that his successful World Cup campaign can be the catalyst towards a more productive season in North West England.

The Blue-Yellow were ultimately knocked out by Gareth Southgate’s men in Russia, but it was the nation’s best finish since losing the 1958 final, and Lindelof told manutd.com that the experience will help him in the long run.

He said: “Of course, you’re playing against great players and great nations so it was a great experience for me. I’ll remember it for a long time.

“It was a good summer for me. First I got married and that was great, I had an amazing time and then after that I played the World Cup and that was also a great experience for me to be involved in that.

“After a good rest, I’m back here and ready for what’s to come. It’s always nice to get a good start, as that gives you more confidence and you can be more relaxed.”

Lindelof took part in his first World Cup tournament, and the Sweden star admits it was a dream come true to feature in the quadrennial competition.

He added: “It’s hard to describe.

“I’d been dreaming about playing in a World Cup since I was a kid so for me to be able to do that was amazing.

“Everything around it, all the people, it’s the biggest event in the world. It was great.”

A tentative debut season

Lindelof joined Manchester United last summer for a reported £35m from Portuguese outfit Benfica after the Swedish defender impressed at the Estadio da Luz.

The transition from Primeira Liga to Premier League football would prove to be anything but smooth, and the 24-year-old quickly found himself out of favour with manager Jose Mourinho.

He ultimately endured a sporadic maiden season with the Red Devils, starting just 13 league matches, and appearing just a further four times from the bench.

Despite this, Lindelof started during United’s 2-1 opening Premier League victory against Leicester on Friday and will be hoping to start again as the Red Devils lock horns with Brighton this weekend.
