Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui has said that Gareth Bale is one of the reasons Los Blancos are a great club.
The 13-time European champions face their city rivals, Atletico Madrid, in Tuesday’s UEFA Super Cup clash and, speaking to reporters (via Football Espana) ahead of the game, Lopetegui was full of praise for Bale’s motivation and mentality.
He said: “Bale? I love being able to coach him, he has been at the club for many years and has been fantastic in pre-season, super motivated and he is why Madrid are such a great club.”
He added: “The past does not matter with Gareth nor any players, selections will be upon what I see in terms of quality, attitude, work rate.
“It is the same for Karim (Benzema) – a player who I have always liked, who has worked so hard since I have arrived.”
Gareth Bale’s Real Madrid career so far
Since joining Real Madrid from Tottenham in 2013, in a deal worth around £85million, Bale has gone on to win a number of major honours for the Spanish giants – including a La Liga title, a Copa Del Rey and four Champions League crowns.
Bale has often come under scrutiny from sections of the Real support over the years but has always stepped up to the big occasion – the Welshman has found the net in multiple cup finals, including scoring a stunning bicycle kick in last season’s 3-1 Champions League final win over Liverpool.

And, despite some injury problems, the Welsh international has been consistent week-to-week for Madrid too, scoring 88 goals in 189 games across all competitions.
