Antoine Griezmann named one of four successors to Gabi’s Atletico captaincy

Antoine Griezmann has been named among Atletico Madrid’s four new captains following the departure of Gabi to Al Sadd.

Griezmann, who helped France win the World Cup in Russia this summer, is entering his fifth season with the club, having scored 112 goals in 209 games in his first four years.

However, this is the first time he has made the step up to a leadership role, having been named as the third captain.

Experienced centre-half, Diego Godin, has been named as the primary captain, while midfield general Koke is the new vice-captain – veteran full-back Juanfran is now the club’s fourth captain.

Many fans felt Godin was the natural successor to Gabi – the Spanish midfielder shared the same sentiment himself – and, speaking at a press conference (via Goal) ahead of tonight’s European Super Cup clash with Real Madrid, the Uruguayan said: “Being a captain is a thing of happiness, pride and responsibility, especially in this team.

“I feel pride and a lot of responsibility to wear the armband, I have contact with Gabi and we have talked, we would have liked him to be with us.

“We are trying to prepare for the final and the important thing will be tomorrow, what is said in the previous one is hypothesis, it’s up to us to want to win it.

“My personal goals are those of the team, the Champions League is the great dream of this club, the goal is to improve on what was done the previous year.

“We are at a time when new players arrive to improve the team. We are very optimistic.”

Griezmann, Godin and co will have to be at their best tonight if they are to inflict a first overall European defeat over their city rivals.
