The first round of Premier League fixtures of the new season is over and there is one thing on everyone’s lips.
No, it’s not Liverpool’s 4-0 win over West Ham United, the start of Manchester City’s title defence or the fortunes of the three newly-promoted sides.
It’s Dele Alli’s new celebration, which he debuted upon scoring in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Celebrations in football have never been bigger, or more imitable, whether it’s Antoine Griezmann’s ‘Take the L’ dance from Fortnite, Jesse Lingard’s ‘JL’ sign or Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘Siii’ stance.
But people are struggling to copy Alli’s seemingly simple new celebration.
Many have already tried (and failed) to replicate it, including Fulham’s on-loan Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah as well as Spurs teammates Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Fernando Llorente.
Well, we’ve got Fosu-Mensah and the rest of you struggling to replicate Alli’s new celebration covered.
Step one
First, form a hand gesture quite similar to what universally known as the ‘Okay’ sign, only with your thumb pinned back across the palm to meet your index finger.
Step two
Next, flip your hand upside down. You might have found your elbow raised instinctively while doing so, which is good news! That means you’re basically halfway through step three…
Step three
By this point, we’re confident of two things. 1.) This step-by-step is veering into some pretty patronising territory (if its entire premise weren’t patronising already) and 2.) You can take it from here. But just in case, check out the visual below.
Et voila. Simple as that. Although it may cause minor injuries and self-esteem issues in the trying until you become a natural like Dele Alli. Or Jesse ‘the self-proclaim creator’ Lingard.
