Marco Reus named new Borussia Dortmund captain

Borussia Dortmund have announced Marco Reus will be their new captain ahead of the upcoming season.

The previous captain, Marcel Schmelzer, gave up the role in May after admitting it was too tiring for him, as well as bringing a fresh start under new manager Lucien Favre.

Reus had already captained the club on several occasions, including five times last season, but he has now been made the official captain.

And upon naming Reus as captain, Favre revealed it was a logical choice.

“He is a role model,” he told reporters, according to the Bundesliga’s official website.

“He has a lot of experience and has been at the club a long time. It is the logical choice.”

Reus also expressed his feeling of honour toward captaining the club he has been with since 2012 and will continue to represent until 2023, having recently signed a new five-year deal in March 2018.

“The coach told me today that I will be the new captain,” Reus added.

“That is a huge honour and makes me very proud.”

Reus will lead Dortmund out for the first time as the official captain in a league game when they kick off their Bundesliga campaign against RB Leipzig on August 26.

Marco Reus’ Dortmund career so far

While the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Mario Gotze and Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng have all left to try and better their careers, Reus has been a constant in the Dortmund squad since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012.

The German international has since made 204 appearances for Dortmund across all competitions, scoring 96 goals and recording 58 assists.

However, he has only been able to play 39 times over the past two campaigns, having to deal with serious injury problems including a cruciate ligament rupture which kept him out for the first half of last season.
