Luis Suarez has questioned whether Man United will be able to satisfy Paul Pogba’s ambitions at club level.
The Frenchman, 25, won the World Cup this summer with France and proved his ability as an elite central-midfielder after two inconsistent seasons at Old Trafford.
However, United have started the new season in a mixed fashion, losing two in four so far in the league, with Mourinho having faced an early-season crisis of confidence.
And Suarez, 31, has suggested Pogba might be better served at another club, like Barcelona, who he was linked with over the summer.
“Pogba is an elite player – he has won everything,” the Uruguayan told RAC1, via Goal. “He has a lot of quality and he is a key player for United.
“I think he would like to be competing for more [silverware] than he is at the moment. He may not be a Barca player yet, but he would always be welcome.”
And on the topic of Pogba’s France teammate Antoine Griezmann, who was expected to move to Camp Nou this summer but ultimately stayed in Madrid, Suarez said: “It was a surprise [that he stayed at Atletico].
“But you have to respect his decision, which he made with his family. He earned everyone’s respect.
“There was some people saying I would leave if he came in, but I don’t know where that came from. If he came, he would have been well received because he’s an excellent player.”
Had Griezmann arrived at Barcelona, he almost certainly would have taken Suarez’s place in the starting XI.
Pogba, meanwhile, has won the League Cup and the Europa League at United since his £89.3m move to Old Trafford in 2016.
He has made four appearances in the league so far for United, scoring two goals.
United take on Watford away next in the Premier League on September 15.
