Courtois in a Real Madrid shirt is “painful”, says Gabi

Ex-Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has admitted it is “painful” to see Thibaut Courtois in a Real Madrid shirt.

Gabi played alongside the Belgian goalkeeper at Atletico between 2011 and 2014, winning four major honours together – including the 2013/14 La Liga title.

But Courtois sealed a move to Atletico’s city rivals, Real Madrid, from Chelsea this summer in a move believed to be in the region of £35m.

And, speaking to Diario AS (via Football Espana) ahead of Wednesday night’s UEFA Super Cup clash between the two clubs, Gabi said: “Seeing Courtois in a Real Madrid shirt is painful.

“When you have played with somebody and won trophies with them and then to see (them at a rival), it is a strange feeling and it hurts.”

The Madrid derby in Europe

The UEFA Super Cup clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid is the first time two clubs from the same city have met in the competition’s history.

However, it will be the tenth time the two have met in European competition.

In singular matches, Real lead the way with five victories so far, Atletico only have two – as well as drawing two – and have never overcome the 13-time European champions in an overall continental tie.
