Leon Goretzka insists he has no regrets about turning down Barcelona

Leon Goretzka has insisted he holds no regrets about not signing for Barcelona.

The 23-year-old German midfielder ended a five-year association with Schalke 04 after relocating to Bayern Munich this summer on a free transfer.

A wanted man, there were other clubs interested in acquiring his services, including Barcelona, and though Goretzka was flattered by their interest, his mind was already set.

“That was an honour, of course,” he told reporters, according to FourFourTwo.

“I had several options and took a lot of time for my decision and believe that I have made the best choice with Bayern.

“I see myself as a number eight, but I’m flexible. I’m ready to play in different positions.

“I have a very positive impression of [head coach Niko] Kovac. Everything else will come over the next few days.”

Who is Leon Goretzka?

A multifunctional midfielder, Goretzka, who is equally comfortable playing out wide or as a holding midfielder, was commonly used in defensive midfield (10 games) by Schalke boss Domenico Tedesco last season.

Across his last campaign, he featured in no fewer than 26 of Schalke’s 34 Bundesliga matches, having missed the other eight due to various injuries.

Since joining from VfL Bochum in the summer of 2013, he has gone on to make 147 outings for the Royal Blues, registering 19 goals and 17 assists.

Bayern begin their Bundesliga championship defence at home against Hoffenheim on August 24.
