Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says he feels compassion toward Manchester United, though insists his club need to take advantage of the Red Devils’ uncertainty.
Kompany and City are still unbeaten with three wins and one draw, with the Belgian featuring twice as he tries to fight his way back into the starting XI after injury problems.
But United have started the Premier League season with two wins and two defeats, and are four points behind defending champions City.
And Kompany has admitted he understands why United are going through their problems, still yet to truly recover from Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
“I’ll give the neighbours a little bit, I’ll have compassion for them, because Sir Alex Ferguson was such a big personality,” he said, according to Goal.
“You cannot take somebody like that out of a club and think that everything is going to continue like before. You always need a transition period.
“Manchester United are still dealing with a post-Ferguson era. So they will get that side of me, feeling compassionate. But any time it takes them to get back up, we need to take advantage of it.”
Since Sir Alex’s departure, United are yet to win the Premier League with Manchester City being champions twice, alongside Chelsea (twice) and Leicester City.
These title wins have brought a slight shift in the dynamics of football in Manchester, though the Red Devils still hold a big lead historically.
United’s post-Ferguson era
The first coach to replace Sir Alex at Manchester United was hand-picked by the man himself, as David Moyes left Everton for Old Trafford.
But Moyes would not last a full season, with poor managing leaving United to a seventh-placed finish and no European football for the first time in 25 years.
Moyes was replaced by Louis van Gaal, but the Dutchman would last only two seasons, with players reportedly unhappy with his management styles despite bringing an FA Cup in his final game.
Jose Mourinho then stepped in and led United to a League Cup and Europa League in his first season, but finished the second without a trophy for the first time in his managerial career.
This season so far, Mourinho’s future at United has been questioned over his infamous ‘third season syndrome’ and recent defeats to Brighton and Spurs.
