Bayer Leverkusen’s official English twitter account has issued an apology after receiving backlash for trolling Petr Cech.
After a twitter user posted a gif of the Arsenal goalkeeper nearly putting the ball into his own net against Manchester City over the weekend, Bayer’s account replied: “We might know a guy…” which is alluding to their former ‘keeper Bernd Leno who joined the Gunners in the summer before following it up with another tweet which read: “In case you all were wondering how to play out of the back…”
However, a joke it might have been, this did not sit well for many who could not understand why an official representative of a professional football club would publicly mock another professional.
Cech, 36, would subsequently call them out condemning their online behaviour stating it was not befitting of three important values: “fair competition, professionalism and sportsmanship”
Moments after posting his statement Cech would receive an apology, Bayer’s account suggesting it was nothing more than “banter”and that it was just their way of expressing their desire to see Leno play before wishing the former Czech international and his club well.
