Chelsea star Victor Moses has officially announced his retirement from international duty with Nigeria.
The former Crystal Palace academy player decided to switch from England to Nigeria and made his debut back in 2012.
He originally played 29 times for the England U16, U17, U19 and U21 squads, scoring 11 goals in total.
Since then, Moses has played 37 times for Nigeria, scoring 12 goals in his six years of international duty, of which he has now called time on.
Speaking to reporters, Moses said that his decision was determined by his ambition to concentrate on domestic success and life away from football.
“I have experienced some of the best moments of my life wearing the Super Eagles shirt and have memories with me that will last a lifetime,” he said (via BBC Sport).
“However, I feel that now is the right time to step away in order to be able to focus fully on my club career and young family, as well as to allow the next generation the opportunity to step up and to flourish.
“Thank you for the memories and good luck to the team for the future.”
During his time with the Nigeria national squad, Moses won the African Cup of Nations back in 2013. He also helped Nigeria reach two successive FIFA World Cup tournaments, competing in the 2014 competition in Brazil and this year’s World Cup in Russia.
Despite impressing with some decent performances, Nigeria left Russia prematurely after failing to escape the group stages. They defeated Iceland but lost to both Argentina and eventual World Cup finalists Croatia.
