Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge will have to take any chance that comes his way if he is to break into the starting XI this season says former Reds forward Craig Bellamy.
Sturridge has struggled with injury and fitness across the last few seasons, limiting his game time for the Merseyside club, which has ultimately pushed him down the pecking order, especially with the emergence of Liverpool trio Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
In total, Sturridge has 64 goals in 134 appearances across all competitions for the club but was sent out on loan to West Brom last season to try and regain the form that catapulted him into the England squad, and saw him shine alongside both Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling in the 2013/14 title-chasing season.
The England international scored for the Reds at the weekend as Jurgen Klopp’s side defeated a poor West Ham United team, but former Reds striker Bellamy believes the 28-year-old will have to fight his way back into Klopp’s plans and make sure if an opportunity presents itself, he is fit and ready to pounce.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate (via the Liverpool Echo), Bellamy said: “It would be difficult to accept it, but at this stage of his career, he just has to stay injury free.
“He will only be able to contribute to the team or threaten a place in the starting line-up if he trains hard and does well.
“He might get an opportunity. All it takes is an injury to a team-mate and then you are able to take it.
“But you can’t do that if you’re injured.
“Sturridge is a good kid and a top player. He’s very impressive and can see a pass.
“He can create, has an eye for goal and makes good runs. He’s an intelligent footballer.
“I feel for him, I just want to see him fit because when he’s fit, he’s an outstanding player.”
Liverpool’s next fixture is away to Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace side – who defeated Fulham 2-0 last weekend – on Monday evening.
