Liverpool have only two players good enough for Man City’s XI – Danny Murphy

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes there are only two members of Jürgen Klopp’s side that would currently get into Manchester City’s team, despite last year’s Champions League finalists splashing the cash again this summer.

Many – including City winger Leroy Sane – have tipped Liverpool to challenge Pep Guardiola’s side to this season’s Premier League title. But despite a spending spree that has seen the Reds part with a further £123.6m this summer, Murphy says only Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah would make it into City’s first choice line-up.

The Reds’ summer transfer business has seen them add Brazilian midfielder Fabinho, winger Xherdan Shaqiri and goalkeeper Alisson to their squad. Naby Keita has also arrived after the club agreed a deal to sign him from RB Leipzig last summer.

On paper, Liverpool look to have addressed the problem areas that cost them silverware last season. The £66.9m addition of Alisson made him the most expensive goalkeeper of all time, while Klopp also sanctioned a £75m deal that saw Virgil van Dijk become the world’s most expensive defender in January.

But Murphy, who won a treble of cup competitions with Liverpool in 2001, believes only Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, fresh from a record-breaking debut season with the Reds in which he scored an all-time competition high of 32 goals, would make it into the Premier League Champions’ current XI.

“Fabinho, Keita, Alisson are all good players and they give Liverpool strength in depth and competition for places, which does increase performance, but would any of those players get in City’s team?” he told TalkSport.

“Salah and van Dijk would get in City’s team. Other than that, probably no others.

“You can’t base your transfer policy on buying better players than City have. It is nearly impossible. You can’t buy a better player than De Bruyne in midfield, so you have to compete in a different way.”

City themselves made history last term by becoming the first Premier League team to score 100 points and set a new record for the most goals scored in a single season, with 106.

Squawka’s Liverpool-Man City combined XI:

Does Murphy have a point? Or is he being a little harsh on Jürgen Klopp’s side?

We’ve put together our own combined XI and there’s room for three more Liverpool players.
