Real Madrid left-back Marcelo says the clubs’ disappointing performance in their 4-2 Super Cup defeat to Atletico Madrid was because a number of players are still not fully fit following the World Cup.
The game was Julen Lopetegui’s first competitive game in charge and the first time Real Madrid have conceded four goals since 2015.
Many of Real Madrid’s players were involved in this summer’s World Cup, with the likes of Raphael Varane and Luka Modric reaching the final.
Speaking after the match, Marcelo insisted: “We must forget about this and think about La Liga.
“It’s a f*****g loss but we must forget about it.”
When asked why Real Madrid made so many uncharacteristic errors, the Brazilian said they were ‘due to fatigue’ and ‘the few training sessions.’
Real Madrid begin their La Liga campaign against Getafe on Sunday as they begin life without Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Do Real Madrid have enough to be successful this season?
It has also been rumoured that star midfielder Luka Modric, who had a terrific World Cup with Croatia, is seeking an exit, with Inter Milan interested in signing him this summer.
Real Madrid had been heavily linked with both Kylian Mbappe and Eden Hazard, but it seems Lopetegui is happy to stick with what he’s got ahead of the new season.
Following the Champions League final, Gareth Bale hinted that he may also look to move on this summer if he was not given assurances over playing time, but he now looks likely to have a crucial role in the team this season following the departure of Ronaldo.
The Galacticos will certainly need to improve on Wednesday night’s showing if they’re to have any chance of retaining the Champions League title this season.
