Paul Clement hits back at “overweight” and “lazy” Darren Bent after scathing Derby remarks

Reading manager Paul Clement has hit back at Derby County striker Darren Bent after the 34-year-old criticised his former boss in a recent interview.

Bent, who only scored once during the eight months that Clement was in charge at the club was highly critical of his manager’s philosophy and man-management skills.

“I know a lot of people were surprised when he got the sack at Derby,” said Bent (via Give Me Sport).

“But the players in the dressing room knew it was inevitable that he was going to crumble because training had changed, the intensity had changed, his philosophy that he’d brought in at the start of the season started going out of the window, because we weren’t getting the right results and ultimately, he didn’t really like confrontation.

“So when certain players who weren’t in the team went to see him, they weren’t really getting answers.”

Paul Clement was quick to respond to Bent’s comments with a confrontational post on Twitter which cited Bent’s fitness and attitude as the reasons for his former player’s outburst.

The Tweet read: “I sense some bitterness here, which is normal if a player does not play much.

“It is never a difficult decision to leave out a player who is overweight and lazy.”

Clement’s Tweet, has been met with a mixed reaction on social media with some calling them savage and vicious.

Bent spent most of the 2017/18 campaign on loan with Burton Albion where he only made 15 appearances and scored two goals, he was released by Derby at the end of the season.

Frank Lampard’s Derby County side got off to a winning start against Clements’s Reading on Friday, winning 2-1 at the Madejski Stadium.

Derby host Leeds United next Saturday while Reading travel to Nottingham Forest.
