Spurs announce delay on moving into new stadium

Tottenham Hotspur has been forced to delay the opening of their new stadium over safety issues.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men, barring any significant issues with the final stages of the stadium’s completion, were scheduled to welcome Liverpool as the first visitors on September 15.

However, recent testing has found issues regarding the critical safety systems, meaning that fixture as well as their subsequent home match against Cardiff City (October 6) will be played at Wembley Stadium.

“We know this will be disappointing for all our season tickets holders, premium members and our fans worldwide,” chairman Daniel Levy told the club website.

“We appreciate the support our partner the NFL has shown since the extent of this issue became evident today. At the start of the project we asked for your support during what we knew would be a complex and challenging build and now we ask for your continued patience and forbearance.”

A new era

Spurs end a 117-year association with their spiritual home White Hart Lane in 2017 and contested all their home matches at the home of English football last season whilst their new stadium was being constructed ahead of this campaign.

Opened in September 1899, the first match at the Lane was a 4-1 win over Notts County, with the final game being a 2-1 victory against Manchester United.

Spurs, following this setback, will provide a further updates whilst adding domestic and European cup match venues will be determined following discussions with the relevant organising bodies.

Heading into the 2018 campaign Spurs were given permission by Premier League and Football Association to continue to use Wembley until their stadium was up and running.

The Lillywhites, following their opening weekend victory at St James’ Park, will entertain newly promoted Fulham on August 18.
