Manchester United are still suffering from the poor signings made by former manager Louis Van Gaal according to Gary Neville.
United opened their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday, with their performance far from convincing throughout.
An early penalty from Paul Pogba – who is reportedly unhappy with life in Manchester – and a strike from Luke Shaw was enough to ensure a late goal from Jamie Vardy didn’t impact on the overall result.
United boss Jose Mourinho has spent close to £300 million since his arrival in 2016 but is yet to get his hands on the Premier League trophy with the Red Devils, with the Champions League also escaping any real United charge.
Former United right-back Neville believes that the club is still suffering from the poor signings that were brought in by former boss Van Gaal, who was famously relinquished of his role minutes after winning the FA Cup final in 2016.
Former United defender and Sky Sports pundit Neville said: “The club have spent £700m since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, it’s a fortune.
“If you’d have said to me six years ago that Manchester United were the title winners and then would spend £700m in the next few years, I would have said that they would have won multiple titles.
“It hasn’t gone well, but you’ve got to remember Jose Mourinho has spent a lot of money, but the Louis van Gaal signings I have to say were really poor.
“So Jose Mourinho has had to get out of the club seven, eight, nine, 10 players, and then get them in.
“He’s only been here two years, he’s not been here 15 years.
“So for me, there is still more investment to do to make up for the mistakes in those first three or four seasons.
“I actually like the signings Jose Mourinho has made, they’re more along the lines of the players I’d like to see at this football club.”
United’s next fixture is against Brighton on Sunday.
