Explained: Why Gareth Bale’s overhead kick vs. Liverpool was not nominated for UEFA goal of the season

UEFA have released their nominations for the 2017/18 Goal of the Season award, and some fans are not happy about a certain goal that is omitted from the list.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning overhead kick for Real Madrid against Juventus back in April is the nominee from the Champions League.

The other nominees from the professional men’s section are Dimitri Payet’s exquisite effort for Marseille against RB Leipzig in the Europa League quarter-final, and Christian Eriksen’s finishing off a vintage team effort for Denmark in their World Cup qualifying win over the Republic of Ireland.

But, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo has once again become the major talking point.

As brilliant a strike as that was – enough to earn a standing ovation from the fans he will now play in front of every week – many people have taken to social media to express their outrage that Gareth Bale’s overhead kick in Real Madrid’s Champions League final win over Liverpool was omitted from the shortlist.

However, whether you’re in Camp Bale or Camp Ronaldo, there is a very simple explanation as to why both goals haven’t been nominated.

The rules of the competition state that it can only include one goal from each UEFA competition, with Ronaldo’s bicycle kick winning out against that of his former teammate.

That still hasn’t stopped fans speculating about why Ronaldo’s goal was favoured by UEFA – with some even speculating it is a ‘political choice’ as Ronaldo is the Champions League poster boy.

Whilst fans continue to debate which bicycle kick should have been put forward as the premium Champions League effort from 2017/18, it’s worth noting that Squawka in fact ran a poll essentially asking this question after Bale had scored his in the final in Kyiv.

With an incredible 81% of the vote – 19,030 users had their say on Twitter – it was Bale’s effort that triumphed in this particular competition.

Unfortunately for the Welshman, Squawka polls have no say when it comes to the official UEFA nominations.

Gareth Bale is set to feature for Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup against local rivals Atletico on Wednesday.

Former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to make his Serie A debut at Verona on Saturday.
